Abstrakt:

The last two decades have shown important progress in research on clay figurines from the 3rd millennium BC Mesopotamia, being one of the most abundantly represented aspects of the material culture of this ancient land. However, besides the traditional typological analysis, there have been no recent attempts at a systematic presentation and discussion of general characteristics of the Mesopotamian terracottas. With this lecture will be presented a progress report on a quantitative approach to the definition of the local traditions and trajectories in coroplastic arts of the 3rd millennium BC Mesopotamia. This study will include two most abundantly attested categories of terracottas, namely anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines. The proposed method aims at determining the structure and general characteristic of the collections of figurines from particular sites with the help of two major factors: proportions between anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines and between different kinds of animals among zoomorphic figurines. The research bases on the material from 30 sites distributed throughout Mesopotamia. The results obtained for particular sites will be comparatively analysed on a regional an supra-regional level. An overview of some possible interpretations of the observed patterns will be also presented.
